Henriette Morel was one of the most important 20th century Lyonnais women painters. Born in 1883 in Villeurbanne, which is contiguous with Lyon, from 1903 she started exhibiting in the official salons, but in the 1920s became a founding member of modernist group of Lyonnais painters known as the ‘Ziniars’ and of the breakaway Salon – the ‘Salon du Sud-Est’. Her works are in the collection of the Musée de Beaux-Arts de Lyon, and she was the longtime partner of the Lyon painter Pierre Combet-Descombes.
In this still-Iife of wildflowers arranged haphazardly in a vase sitting on a table, it is not only the flowers and their stems which attract the eye, but the setting itself, a beautiful piece of white-on-white painting.
