Henri Reboa was a Marseilles painter associated with the ‘Peintres du Péano’, particularly known for his bold and colourful gouaches. The Péano was a café in the Old Port of Marseilles where artists (many from Italian and Spanish immigrant families), poets, and journalists gathered, at the centre of bohemian life in Marseilles from the 1940s to the 1970s. The work of these painters, infused with the light and contrasts of the Mediterranean, is unashamedly colourful and graphically direct. Reboa’s gouaches were highly regarded in the 1950s and 1960s when he was an integral part of the Péano scene.
