Gabrielle Foivard (parfois Marie Gabrielle Foivard) fut le plus important élève de Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (pour ça voir les deux volumes du livre par la fille de Carpeaux, Louise Clément-Carpeaux). Elle travailla à Paris et reçut plusieurs commandes de l’État. Ce buste est un portrait du médecin, philosophe, lexicographe, et homme politique, Émile Littré. Le grand homme a un visage très usé et plein de caractère. Le portrait est posthume, Foivard a daté le buste de 1882, et Littré est mort 1881. Ce buste, ou un autre exemplaire en plâtre, fut exposé à Boston, Massachusetts, en 1883. Il s’agit d’une réduction d’un marbre commandé pour la Galerie Historique de Versailles.

Gabrielle Foivard, sometimes called Marie Gabrielle Foivard, was the most important pupil of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (for this see the two volumes of the book written by Carpeaux’s daughter, Louise Clément-Carpeaux). She worked in Paris and received several state commissions. This bust is a portrait of the doctor, philosopher, lexicographer, and politician, Émile Littré. The great man has a very worn face full of character. The portrait is posthumous, Foivard’s bust is dated 1882, and Littré died in 1881. This bust, or another example in plaster, was exhibited in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1883. It is a reduction of a marble commissioned for the Historical Gallery of Versailles.
